DR HILARY JONES ENCOURAGES SMOKERS
TO GET BREATHLESS ON TREADMILLS - NOT ON TOBACCO
This month (July) marks the second anniversary of the widespread smoking ban in the UK and while around 800,000 people quit at this time the rate has now fallen dramatically.
TV doctor and Fitness First medical advisor Dr Hilary Jones said this anniversary of the ban is the ideal time to look again at the impact smoking still has in the UK, and what can be done to encourage more smokers to kick the habit.
“Most of us understand what the risks are with smoking from chronic respiratory disorders such as bronchitis and emphysema to heart disease and cancers but taking that first step is key,’ he said. “At the moment smoking diseases still cost the NHS £5 billion a year and is responsible for a fifth of all deaths and significant disability.’’
Stress is the main reason smokers say they can’t give up but Dr Hilary is among experts calling for tighter regulations and more help for people to quit.
Measures such as banning smoking in hospital grounds have been suggested together with removing vending machines and stopping shops openly displaying tobacco products and Dr Hilary is backing positive steps in terms of helping quitters get fit.
“There is no doubt that starting a fitness regime can be very useful in helping quitters as very quickly people will find their breathing improves and they can exercise for longer than ever before.’’
Dr Hilary said this is a great early boost to encourage people to continue their good intentions. “Fitness First can play an important role in encouraging more people to quit now that we have passed the second anniversary of the smoking ban.
“There is now only one good reason now to be short of breath –working hard on the treadmill at your local Fitness First.’’
