Personal Trainers

Personal Training with Fitness First

In 2002, Fitness First UK launched its 1:1 personal training programme, revolutionising the way that Personal Training is delivered. This new way of approaching personal training raised member usage from 1-2% to 10%, with some clubs reporting as much as 20% takeup!

With this in mind, the philosophy of our Personal Trainers is to ensure that Personal Training is never out of reach to ANY of our members.

Becoming a Personal Trainer with Fitness First

Fitness First runs a licensed Personal Training product, which means every one of our 900+ Personal Trainers are self-employed and work by the terms of our 1:1 license.

Being self-employed has obvious benefits:
  • Be your own boss
  • Structure your own day
  • Be as successful as YOU want to be!

But with great power comes great responsibility. To ensure that you build a successful PT business within Fitness First, always remember that you’ll only get out of it what you put in.

How much can you earn?

Before a 1:1 PT starts in the club, a £200 annual license fee is paid to Fitness First to covering the following:

  • Fitness First branded 1:1 uniforms
  • Bespoke profile board for use in-club
  • 250 branded 1:1 business cards
  • Access to www.ptonthenet.com
  • A two-day Personal Trainer business course (see below)
  • Access to over 400,000 Fitness First members across the UK

All our Personal Trainers pay a weekly rental fee, built gradually into the first three-six-months of starting a PT business. This fee ranges from £25 per week in the early stages to a maximum of £80-£150 per week, depending on the location and demographics of the week.

Wherever the club is, and whatever the rental fee is, the maximum rent per week should equate to no more than 3-4 session prices, leaving the remainder of the revenue for you.

Required Qualifications

Before you can become a Personal Trainer, either with or outside Fitness First, you need to hold the appropriate documentation and qualifications.

  • Valid fitness related qualification at minimum of NVQ level II
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • Valid Personal Liability Insurance, with cover of at least £2million
  • Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) registration and certificate

Fitness First is committed to making our PT workforce the best in the industry, which is why we are currently making the best training providers available to all Fitness First PTs so that ongoing education requirements are met.

Why join the Fitness First team?

To complement the training provided by external providers, Fitness First also ensures that you get off on the right foot as a 1:1 PT with our two-day PT Business, Sales and Practical Skills course.

Offered on a regular basis so that new starters can access training immediately, this course instructs you:

  • How to set up your business
  • Tax and the Inland Revenue
  • Sales skills—incorporating everything from communication to overcoming objections and price presentation
  • Client care
  • PT marketing
  • Practical skills- increasing your ‘PT toolbox’

We believe strongly in our 1:1 PT product, and offer continued support to ensure that every member has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of Personal Training. An introduction to Personal Training is included in the Get Results! pack which is purchased by half of our new members, giving new Personal Trainers the opportunity to spend at least half-an-hour demonstrating the benefits of personal training to up to 50 new members per month. Combined with other member incentives to drive our PT business, and supported by generic product marketing for our 1:1 service, Fitness First's Personal Trainers are provided with constant opportunity to develop and grow their business.
