The most common mistakes PTs see in the gym

July 02 2019

Are you making the same exercise mistakes many people make in the gym? Luke Chamberlain, an experienced Fitness First PT, has told us some of the most common mistakes he sees in the gym and how to avoid them.

Too much weight

A regular mistake many gym-goers make is adding weight to their workouts before perfecting their technique.

Deadlifts are a prime example, as the movement itself is relatively simple. This often leads to overconfidence, which results in heavier weights being used and the risk of injury increases.

Always make sure you’ve mastered your technique before attempting to lift more weight, making sure you’re getting the most out of your movements.

Wasted opportunity

What’s really worrying is the amount of us who spend our hard earned cash on gym memberships, yet never use the facilities.

We all know someone guilty of this, which is why it’s important to stay committed to your workouts, even when the gym is the last thing on your mind.

If you need advice on how to stay motivated, especially during the winter months, we have a list of helpful tips to help you stick to your fitness routine.

Another scary fact is that many people don’t see the results they were promised from their workouts, thanks to receiving unhelpful information.

Sometimes, with so much information at our fingertips, It’s hard to find factual and correct information, and all too easy to get lost in the bombardment of false facts from unqualified individuals (which social media has a lot to say for).

Machinery mayhem

Exercise machines are a great way train specific, isolated muscle groups. However, when used incorrectly, you can risk injuring yourself. Very often people are caught out at the gym using the machines wrong and then don’t achieve their desired goals.

If you’re unsure how to properly use a machine, speak to a professional. Trained members of staff and personal trainers can correct your form and make sure you’re safely getting the most out of your workout.

To ensure you’re getting the help you need to achieve the results you want, the best thing to do is get in touch with a PT and work together to create a bespoke fitness plan based on your needs and wants.
