Time to get aqua fit?

April 06 2022 6 min read

Sometimes it’s hard to get to the gym, but why not let the lure of the water at one of Fitness First's swimming pools in London tempt you and help you indulge in a little gentle exercise?

Swimming is a fantastic way to tone up and burn off calories, and it’s suitable for all ages and fitness abilities. It can also be therapeutic as it helps to reduce anxiety and calm the nervous system, and is one of the best cardiovascular sports going.

Don’t worry if you’re a bit rusty, Fitness First offers expert swimming lessons by Swimming Nature, who hold 30 to 60-minute classes for any ability.  Endorsed by six-time world champion Mark Foster, their instructors are in the pool with you to help bring real encouragement, confidence and precision to your technique.

And while you`re there why not take the plunge and try one of our new aqua aerobics classes? These low-impact pool-based fitness workouts get muscles working against the resistance of the water, elevating your heart rate and burning calories, as well as gently toning as you go.

Now there are even more excuses to stay in the pool, as other forms of exercise that are taking to the water include yoga and Zumba. You can perfect your yoga poses in the pool where the resistance of the water will help you to keep your balance and to stay upright. You may need to hang on to the side of the pool to start with, but after a while you will find yourself literally floating away in your chosen pose.

Or you could try some classic Zumba moves. Water resistance (water is approximately 800 times denser than air) works the body harder, which is great for maximising workouts and ideal when recovering from injury, as it strengthens muscles without stressing joints.

All of our pools are open daily and offer lane swimming in London without the need to book. They also give you access to saunas and beauty rooms along with all of our regular gym facilities.
