Frequently asked questions

What is yoga?

Originally a Hindu discipline, yoga is the practice of a sequence of different postures, stretches and breathing techniques. At Fitness First, we teach a range of different yoga classes from dynamic Ashtanga yoga and detoxifying hot yoga to posture-focussed Iyengar yoga and energised Kripalu yoga. Each discipline has its own focus, meaning there’s a style of yoga for everyone.

What are the benefits of yoga?

Yoga is not only a brilliant way to train your body but it also helps to calm your mind. The physical benefits of yoga include a stronger core, improved balance, greater flexibility and more control over your own body weight. Yoga also helps to sharpen your concentration, aid sleep and relieve stress.

What can I expect from a yoga class?

If you’re joining a beginner’s class, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of yoga. This will usually focus on the key poses (asanas) without being too challenging. As you take more advanced classes, you’ll learn to better control your bodyweight and perform more advanced asanas. Classes may also involve meditation, chanting and other aspects of yoga, depending on your instructor.

How often should I do yoga?

How often you take part in yoga depends on your fitness level, skill and overall health. Like any other training, a good benchmark is to commit to 3-5 yoga sessions a week. This will allow you to see the benefits while also giving your body time to recover.

How many calories can you burn in a yoga class?

Yoga classes can vary greatly in intensity, meaning the number of calories you burn will differ depending on the type of yoga and the difficulty of the poses (asanas). In general, you can expect to burn between 180 and 460 calories in an hour-long yoga class.

Do I need to have yoga experience?

Yoga may seem intimidating at first, but you don’t need previous experience to join a beginner’s class. They’re low-impact and non-competitive, so every class is held in a relaxed, friendly environment and are open for anyone to take part in.
