Inspirational stories: How 2 members changed their lives

March 18 2015

Losing weight takes dedication, persistence and hard work. Sometimes it may feel like you will never reap the fruits of your labour - but don’t feel disheartened.

At Fitness First Clubs we witness the amazing progress that our members make first hand. Some people’s transformations are unbelievable and it’s all down to their own hard work and determination to change their lives for the better. If you’re in the middle of your own weight loss journey, you’ll know just how challenging it can be and how hearing other people’s personal stories can provide you with the added inspiration you need to keep going.

We’ve included the stories of two of our most inspirational members, Charlotte and Laura, as well as some tips to help you stay on track to help you reach your own fitness goals.

Charlotte Turner, Nottingham

Mum of 2 boys, works part time in a school for autistic children.

“16 months ago I lost my mum to lung cancer, I really hit rock bottom once she passed and I sat in the house and basically just ate rubbish and put loads of weight on. After a few months I knew that my mum wouldn't want me being like this so whilst I was still off work I decided to sort myself out and get in the gym (DW Netherfield Nottingham).

“I threw myself straight in at the deep end and did my first Insanity class, standing at the back near the door so I could make a quick exit without anyone noticing - but I didn't leave, I stayed until the end and really enjoyed it! I went again the following week and it made me realise I really wanted to try more.

“I approached one of the personal trainers and agreed to have a session with her. She created a food plan, but it wasn't until she weighed me and took photos of me that I realised just how much I’d let myself go. I now have weekly training sessions with her and I'm now in preparation for a fitness show in April!

“I'm loads more confident than I've ever been and I do believe that I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn't joined Fitness First Clubs!”

Laura - St Helens

“I am a member at DW St. Helens and have lost 6 stone in total to date. My weight loss has been over some years due to gaining weight back, however in the last 6 months I have lost 4 stone and am now the lightest I have been during my adult life.

“DW St. Helens has changed my life - the staff, instructors and members have become good friends and make my training sessions so enjoyable.

“I usually attend the club twice a day, 5-6 days a week and take part mostly in the group exercise classes. My favourites are BESTcycle, pump, circuits, Insanity and body combat. I have also recently taken part in the Fit45ive challenge for the Hand on Heart charity, completing 5 classes back to back.

“I think the instructors at my club make it so enjoyable and are so motivating in classes and that is why I enjoy going so much, especially Kim with whom I do BESTcycle, pump and circuits classes with. I will continue my weight loss journey with DW as I have around 2 more stone to lose.”

The support of the trainers at Fitness First really improved both Charlotte and Laura’s focus on achieving their personal fitness goals. If you feel like you need more focus on your own workouts why not book a session with one of our personal trainers today?

Take progress pictures

When you are used to looking at your body everyday, it can be difficult to visualise how far you’ve come. Take progress pictures, like the ones Charlotte and Laura did, every few weeks so you can visually see just how well you are doing.

Pick something you enjoy

As we’ve read in the two stories above, both of the women chose exercises that they really loved doing, so the gym was something they looked forward to rather than something they dreaded. Find something you really enjoy such as a group exercise class and you won’t even feel like you’re working out.

Exercise often

You don’t have to exercise for hours and hours everyday, but you do need to stick to your routine and exercise frequently. Stick to shorter sessions 5 times a week to see real progress.

Reward yourself

Reward yourself for all of your hard work. Pick a reward that is linked to your fitness goal to encourage you to keep going. For every milestone you hit, why not treat yourself to a new exercise top or a sports bottle?

Share your achievements

Sharing your successes shows you how far you’ve come and can boost your self esteem. Having a group where you can talk about your progress can also help as you can swap tips and inspiration.
