Never miss a single gain again
Real talk: strength training is one of the most evidence-backed forms of exercise there is.
There’s been enough research done to show that resistance training reigns supreme when it comes to building muscle, improving metabolic health, protecting your bones, supporting your mental health and – if you stick with it – even extend your healthspan.
Maybe you know some of this already, maybe you don’t. But having that information and knowing how to make it work for you? They’re two very different things. And that’s where able comes in.
Our smart fitness system removes all the guesswork from your training. Built to give you a complete picture of your overall performance and health, it pulls data from regular strength, cardio, flexibility and metabolism testing to work out your biological age. That’s the ‘BioAge’ you’ll hear us talking about. (A lot.)
We may be biased… but when it comes to accurately tracking and pushing your gains, it’s a tool that’s hard to beat. But before we go deep diving on the details, let’s start from the top. What is strength training? How can able help? And why you should care about that data in the first place?
What is strength training?
Strength training – also known as resistance training or weight training – is any form of exercise that makes your muscles work against resistance. It can come from free weights, machines, resistance bands or even your own bodyweight. What matters is the amount of effort it makes you put in.
This effort is something that you can increase through ‘progressive overload’ – upping the challenge put on your muscles over time so they adapt, grow stronger and keep improving. If you don’t keep adding weight, reps or sets your progress will come to a standstill. But if you do? Those gains can start compounding.
The theory’s pretty simple – but following it can be harder than you’d think. What weight should I be lifting? How many reps? Am I actually progressing or just going through the motions? These are the sorts of questions that can throw off beginners and plateau experienced lifters alike.
The benefits of strength training
Yes, it builds muscle. We probably all know that. But that’s not the only reason consistent resistance training has got itself such a good rep:
Preserves muscle
From the age of 30 to 60 we lose approximately 250g of muscle each year - a process that accelerates significantly after 70. Resistance training doesn't just build muscle, it preserves it, slowing and reversing that loss. Research from the American College of Sports Medicine confirms resistance training as the primary intervention for preventing and reversing age-related muscle decline.
Boosts metabolism
A Current Sports Medicine Reports review of resistance training's health effects found a measurable metabolic shift after just ten weeks: resting metabolic rate climbed by roughly 7%, alongside a 1.4kg gain in lean mass and a 1.8kg drop in fat mass. In other words, your body was burning more energy at rest before you'd even changed anything else.
Improves metabolic health
Resistance training reduces visceral fat, improves insulin sensitivity and supports healthy blood sugar regulation. Diabetes UK references strength training as a way to help manage those with diabetes, prediabetes and those at risk of type 2.
Protects your heart
The British Heart Foundation recommends resistance and strength training as a way to reduce the risk of heart and circulatory diseases - as well as making movement less demanding on your heart by making everyday tasks much easier.
Supports mental health
Research consistently associates resistance training with reduced anxiety, lower rates of depression and improved cognitive function. A 2018 meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry found that resistance training significantly reduced depressive symptoms across a wide range of adults, regardless of health status.
Extends your healthspan
Not just how long you live, but how well. Stronger people are more independent, more resilient to injury and more capable across every decade of life.
The problem with standard strength training
It’s true to say that literally any amount of resistance training is better than none. (Science says so.) But what that doesn’t tell you is that random training produces random results.
If your load, tempo and progression aren’t tailored to the individual’s body and goals, you’ll likely end up going too easy (limiting adaptation) or too hard (increasing injury risk.) You don’t need us to tell you that neither outcome is good.
What’s crazy is that people can spend literal years training without ever really knowing if they’re working in the right direction, let alone the right intensity. The result is wasted effort, slow progress and the kind of plateau that makes you want to throw the towel in.
But it’s not just about upping the numbers on your plates. It’s making sure you train at the right level of challenge… for you.
How able eliminates the guesswork
You’ve probably noticed our able machines in club. If not, in a few short paragraphs, we guarantee you’re going to be wanting to book your complimentary 1:1 sessions in.
Our (very) smart fitness system is based around machines to test core functional movements. Starting with a full body diagnosis to establish exactly where you are in terms of strength, cardio, flexibility and metabolic health, it tracks all your markers in your personal profile. From that baseline, it builds a programme calibrated to your goals – and crucially, automatically adapts as you progress.
Every time you log into able, each machine will adjust so it’s personalised to you. Adjusting not only to your body, it also adjusts load and resistance in real time, all while tracking your output and updating your plan as you go – based on how you’re actually performing. That means no generic programming or guesswork in the mix – just a clear strategy for you to stick to (on the floor as well) each time you come to the gym.
And underpinning all of it? Your BioAge.
BioAge tracks your biological age across four pillars - strength, cardio, flexibility and metabolism - and shows you how your training is changing it over time. At the core of the strength pillar are able's Strength Tests. Built into each machine, they measure your performance across key movements to calculate your Strength BioAge and give you a precise, data-driven starting point.
It all begins with an able Discovery Session - a guided introduction that runs you through the Strength Tests and establishes your baseline across every pillar. From there, regular Strength Tests and complimentary able follow-up check-ins track exactly how you're progressing over time. And when you're ready to push further? able Pro takes everything to the next level.
It's the difference between feeling like you're getting stronger and having the numbers to prove it.
able Pro: when you're ready to push further
Got some serious goals to smash? able Pro is the system for more experienced lifters – making sure you leave no gain behind. Introducing five advanced training modes into the mix, each one is engineered to target a specific training outcome with precision that standard gym equipment simply can't match.
Regular
The foundation mode. Regular delivers steady resistance across every rep – ideal for building confidence with the equipment, returning to training after a break, or establishing the base from which everything else builds. It boosts endurance, burns calories efficiently and sets you up for long-term progress.
Adaptive
Adaptive mode automatically adjusts resistance as your muscles fatigue during a set – so the intensity stays optimal from the first rep to the last. According to EGYM, the company behind able’s machines, Adaptive mode is designed to trigger more growth hormone release than standard training, it’ll help deliver the equivalent effect of three sets in a single focused set. More stimulus, less time, fresher nervous system for the rest of your session.
Negative
Muscle growth happens during the lowering (eccentric) phase of a movement – but most standard training underloads it. Negative mode adds resistance specifically during that phase, targeting muscle breakdown and growth more directly. Normally the eccentric phase requires a spotter to load safely; able Pro builds it in, so you can train heavy eccentrics alone, without risk.
Isokinetic
Standard resistance has weak points – aka places in the range of motion where the load drops off and muscles get an easy ride. Isokinetic mode eliminates those gaps, providing consistent resistance through every angle of every rep. The result is maximum muscle engagement throughout the full movement. According to EGYM's research, Isokinetic mode can be twice as effective at building strength as standard training - making it particularly powerful for breaking through plateaus.
Explonic
Power (the ability to produce force quickly) is a distinct quality from strength, and one that matters enormously for athletic performance and long-term physical capability. Explonic mode trains fast-twitch muscle fibres using explosive movement patterns, safely and without the technique demands of traditional power training like plyometrics or Olympic lifts. It’s speed and strength, all in the same set.
Strength training for your goal
Strength training for weight loss
Resistance training is one of the most effective tools for fat loss – not because it burns the most calories during a session, but because it builds muscle that burns more energy at rest. Increasing your resting metabolic rate through consistent training means your body works harder even when you're not. Combine that with able's personalised programming and BioAge tracking, and every session will be moving you in the right direction.
Strength training for back muscles
The back is one of the most undertrained areas in standard gym programmes – and one of the most important. Strong back muscles support posture, protect the spine, reduce lower back pain and improve performance across virtually every other exercise. able's full-body programming ensures the back gets the attention it deserves, with movements like rows, lat pulldowns and hinge patterns built in from the start.
